The earliest Gutke ancestor I am currently researching is Johannes Gutke. His “Americanized” name is John. Here is a general overview:
John was born in Sweden in 1816. He lived in Sweden until about 1878, when he came to Logan, Utah with his wife Johanna and two of their younger children. They ended up living in Smithfield. Some of John and Johanna’s married children also emigrated from Sweden and came to Utah during this time period. John's son Fred (or Andrew Frederick Gutke) is the son I am descended from.
The main reason that John and Johanna emigrated from Sweden is that they joined the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In Sweden they were both part of the leadership of the growing branch there before they emigrated. Johanna was the first Relief Society president.
John died from asthma complications in 1888. He was staying at the Clift House Hotel owned by his son-in-law, A.C. Brixen.
I am working on details ... Anyone out there from the Logan Gutke's have pictures, histories etc. to share?
