Oscar Gutke director of Montello Salt Company

The following entries concern the Montello Salt Company which Oscar Gutke was involved in.

January 11, 1908 in the Ogden Standard:
Meeting of Montello Salt Co.
Stockholders Transact Business in Court Room. Board of Directors Elected for Ensuing Year--Large Amount of Business Transacted.

Montello Salt Company held a stockholder's meeting in the county court room last evening for the purpose of electing a new board of directors. The meeting was well attended and much interest was taken in the election of the board of governors for the ensuing year. The following directors were elected: Frederick Easton, O. J. Gutke, S. T. Corn, S. W. Badcon, S. A. Maginnis, Joseph Carlson, all of Ogden, and D. S. Clark of Montello.

According to the statements of stockholders last evening this company is destined to become one of the greatest industrial concerns of Utah and the greatest salt company of the entire intermountain regioin. The company is incorporated for $1,000,000, divided into shared of the par value of $1 each and has located under the placer claims act of 1901 15,000 acres of salt lands that lie adjacent to the Great Salt Lake, immediately northwest of Grantsville in Tooele county. The Western Pacific railroad passes through these lands. It is claimed by the company that the salt on these lands is from two feet to fifteen feet in depth and is almost pure. One of the officers of the company made the statement that there are now on the lands two billion tons of this salt ready for use. It may be scraped up with a steam shovel and shipped to the market, no refining being necessary. Of course the salt will not be used for table purposes in its present state, but will be used chiefly for packing and for feeding stock.

Just now the title to these lands is under a cloud and action is pending in Judge Lewis' court of Tooele county to quiet the title. As soon as this company was formed, which was about a year ago, the state of Utah enjoined them from taking salt from the lands, on the ground they they belong to the state by virtue of the enabling act ceding certain saline lands to Utah. The Montello company contends, however, that these lands are not included in the lands mentioned in the magna charta of Utah and are subject to entry as placer lands as defined in the United States land law. Judge Corn expressed the thought tat the meeting last evening that it was certain that they could and would hold the lands to be placer lands and subject to entry as such. A decision in the case is expected in the near future.

As soon as the title to the lands is quieted, the company will begin a vigorous campaign of gathering salt and placing the product on the market. It will mean the turning over and diversion into various channels of a great amount of money and will develop a mammoth industry. It is thought that the supply of salt there is almost limitless and that in places it will reach a depth of twenty-five feet. Most of the stockholders of the company are Ogden men and the company's headquarters are established here.

August 4, 1908 from the Ogden Standard:
Meeting of Montello Salt Co.
"The stockholders of the Montello Salt Company met in adjourned session last evening for the purpose of electing officers for the ensuing year...... The election of officers being the paramount business before the meeting, nothing of the proposed policy of the company was discussed, but it is understood that as soon as the title to the salt lands calimed by the company can be settled the company will commence development work and in a very short time a goodly quantity of salt will be placed on the market. At present the company has a law suit on its hands and no development work can be done until this litigation is definitely settled..... The names of the members of the board of directors elected last evening are as follows: ..... O. J. Gutke....."
