Ogden Standard 1903-05-27
C.O. Dise, a brakeman employed by the Southern Pacific, met with a serious accident at Promontory on the main line of the railroad this morning, early. He was going west on a freight train which had stopped at Promontory to do some switching. He had gone back to the middle of the train to uncouple two cars. They happened to be the large steel gondola cars used in hauling coal. Dise released the air brakes and reached in to draw the pin when the cars got the slack from the released brakes and came together with a crash catching his right arm between the knuckles of the automatic brakes. The arm was crushed to a pulp from the middle of the forearm to a few inches above the elbow. Aid was quickly summoned by Conductor Gutke who had charge of the train and the injured man was placed in a caboose and brought to Ogden as soon as possible.
He was taken to the hospital and the arm was amputated.
Dise is a single man, a resident of Ogden and had been employed by the company only a short time.
